“A lil’ late, a lil’ late . . .” (as Maria “A lil’ late, a lil’ late . . .” (as Mariah Carey would say) Part 1! The book ‘Diva: Feminism and Fierceness from Pop to Hip-Hop’ which I co-edited with Kirsty Fairclough, Benjamin Halligan & Nicole Hodges Persley was published by Bloomsbury a year ago, and we had our book launch at the DIVA exhibition, V&A Museum, London. Many thanks to one of our authors and V&A curator Harriet Reed for organising the event. Swipe to see the images – we had a great time. A shameless book selfie and pictures from the Manchester event will follow soon!

About the book:
“Diva: Feminism and Fierceness from Pop to Hip-Hop addresses the diva phenomenon and its origins: its identity politics and LGBTQ+ components; its creativity and interventions in areas of popular culture and music, and its shifts from third to fourth waves of feminism.”

It was lovely to see some of our authors at the conference: Simon Zagorski-Thomas, Paul Thompson, Pat O’Grady, Iain Findlay-Walsh, Tenley Martin, Brett Lashua, Hussein Boon and Barkley MaKay. More details on the book soon!

Here are a few pics of my keynote. The theme for t Here are a few pics of my keynote. The theme for the @smprmusic conference was ‘Change And Continuity: Traditions, Tensions And Transformations.’  To illustrate the theme, I expanded on one of my Virtual Music book chapters on Grace Jones. To enhance my research in my keynote titled ‘She Lost Control?: Maintaining And Reinventing The ‘Grace Jones Sound’, I had a great chat with the music producer Ivor Guest last month to gain more insight on the Hurricane album. Then I took it from there I explored the music and sound of Grace Jones and analysed the production of ‘Love You to Life’. We were all treated to some moving drum and bass sounds in the theatre (& some Chris Levine’s laser lights on the slides (not live sadly!). Afterwards, I had great conversations with fellow musicians and producers about their experiences and ties with Tom Moulton, Bruce Woolley, Jamaica, etc. and, of course, Grace Jones. Respect! 🖤👊🏾

Even though I was at the event briefly, it was so lovely to reconnect with the Music Production Research Community, make amazing new connections, and hear great research and music. Thank you to @lbu_lsa ‘s Alex Stevenson and Paul Thompson, and the Society for Music Production Research for the opportunity and for hosting such a great event. More pics to follow . . .
